The efficiency of worked examples compared to erroneous examples, tutored problem solving, and problem solving in computer-based learning environments

چکیده
How much instructional assistance to provide to students as they learn, and what kind of assistance to provide, is a much-debated problem in research on learning and instruction. This study presents two multi-session classroom experiments in the domain of chemistry, comparing the effectiveness and efficiency of three high-assistance (worked examples, tutored problems, and erroneous examples) and one low-assistance (untutored problem solving) instructional approach, with error feedback consisting of either elaborate worked examples (Experiment 1) or basic correctness feedback (Experiment 2). Neither experiment showed differences in learning outcomes among conditions, but both showed clear efficiency benefits of worked example study: equal levels of test performance were achieved with significantly less investment of time and effort during learning. Interestingly for both theory and practice, the time efficiency benefit was substantial: worked example study required 46e68% less time in Experiment 1 and 48e69% in Experiment 2 than the other instructional approaches. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Worked Examples and Tutored Problem Solving: Redundant or Synergistic Forms of Support?
The current research investigates a combination of two instructional approaches, tutored problem solving and worked examples. Tutored problem solving with automated tutors has proven to be an effective instructional method. Worked-out examples have been shown to be an effective complement to untutored problem solving, but it is largely unknown whether they are an effective complement to tutored...
متن کاملAre worked examples and tutored problem solving synergistic forms of support?
Tutored problem solving with automated tutors has proven to be an effective instructional method. Worked-out examples have been shown to be an effective complement to untutored problem solving, but it is largely unknown whether they are an effective complement to tutored problem solving. Further, while computer-based learning environments offer the possibility of adaptively transitioning from e...
متن کاملTutored Problem Solving vs . “ Pure ” Worked Examples
At present a handful of comparisons have been made of different variants of worked examples and tutored problem solving. There is some evidence to report a benefit of adding worked examples (WE) to current tutored problem solving (TPS) environments. Our research investigated how a “pure” WE condition could compete with a TPS condition. By pure we mean the WE condition does not include tutoring,...
متن کاملAdaptive Support versus Alternating Worked Examples and Tutored Problems: Which Leads to Better Learning?
Learning from worked examples has been shown to be superior to unsupported problem solving when first learning in a new domain. Several studies have found that learning from examples results in faster learning in comparison to tutored problem solving in Intelligent Tutoring Systems. We present a study that compares a fixed sequence of alternating worked examples and tutored problem solving with...
متن کاملExamples and Tutored Problems: Adaptive Support Using Assistance Scores
Research shows that for novices learning from worked examples is superior to unsupported problem solving. Additionally, several studies have shown that learning from examples results in faster learning in comparison to supported problem solving in Intelligent Tutoring Systems. In a previous study, we have shown that alternating worked examples and problem solving was superior to using just one ...
